The short version
Sprout Social is an enterprise social media management platform. It's built for 10+ person marketing departments with compliance requirements, social listening needs, and multi-brand workflows. At $249/mo per user, it's priced for that market.
Heist is built for solo creators, small teams, and agencies under 25 brands who need AI content generation, scheduling, and brand memory without enterprise pricing. Heist Pro is $49/mo flat. Heist Agency is $199/mo for unlimited brands.
These are genuinely different products for different stages. The question is which stage you're at.
When Sprout is the right call
Pick Sprout if any of these apply:
- You manage 20+ social accounts under compliance requirements (healthcare, finance, legal)
- Social listening is a core daily workflow (competitor tracking, brand mentions, sentiment)
- Unified inbox management is core (you have a team responding to DMs/comments)
- You need multi-stage approval workflows with legal review
- You have budget for $249+/mo per user and want dedicated customer success
When Heist is the right call
Switch to Heist if any of these apply:
- You're a solo creator, small team, or agency under 25 clients
- Content generation is the bottleneck, not social listening
- You write your own content (or want AI to write it) rather than managing a team of writers
- $49-199/mo is the right price point for your stage
- You want a tool that sets up in 10 minutes, not a week
The honest assessment
Most Sprout users we talk to use about 20-30% of the product. They signed up because their org required enterprise compliance or because they needed one feature (social listening, unified inbox) and got the whole platform.
If your primary pain is "I need to generate good content faster," Sprout isn't optimized for that. Heist is. At 1/5 the price.
If your primary pain is "I need to monitor brand mentions across 50 channels and route responses to my team," Heist isn't the right tool. Stick with Sprout.
Pricing reality
Sprout Social tiers:
- Standard: $249/mo/user
- Professional: $399/mo/user
- Advanced: $499/mo/user
Heist tiers:
- Starter: $19/mo (1 brand, 100 posts)
- Pro: $49/mo (1 brand, 500 posts, full Brain)
- Founder: $99/mo (unlimited posts + blog)
- Agency: $199/mo (25 brands, team seats)
For a 5-person marketing team, Sprout Standard is $1,245/mo. Heist Agency is $199/mo total. The 6x price difference reflects the genuinely different product scope — not a direct comparison — but for most small teams, Heist covers enough of the actual workflow at a fraction of the cost.
Where Sprout Social is better
- Enterprise compliance. Sprout has SOC2, HIPAA-readiness, audit logs, and the compliance controls that 500-person marketing departments need. Heist has basic compliance but nothing close to Sprout's depth.
- Social listening. Sprout's listening is genuinely best-in-class — real-time monitoring of brand mentions, sentiment analysis, competitive intelligence. Heist doesn't do any of this.
- Unified inbox. Sprout's inbox handles DMs, comments, and mentions across all platforms in one view with assignment, routing, and reply workflows. Heist has no inbox.
- Enterprise review workflows. Multi-stage approval, legal review, and compliance sign-off built into the publishing flow. Heist doesn't have this.
- Dedicated customer success. At Sprout's price point you get actual human account management. Heist is more self-service.
Where Heist is better
- AI content generation. Sprout has an "Enhance by AI" feature for editing copy. Heist has a 10-layer Brain that generates entire posts from your voice, audience, and past performance. Different category.
- Fraction of the price. Sprout Standard starts at $249/mo per user. Heist Pro is $49/mo flat. At 5 users, Sprout is $1,245/mo and Heist is $49/mo (or $199/mo on Agency tier).
- Built for content generators, not inbox managers. Sprout assumes you have a team writing content and your job is to schedule, approve, and respond. Heist assumes you're writing the content yourself and need the AI to help.
- Performance learning loop. Heist uses your past engagement to improve future generations. Sprout shows you analytics but doesn't close the loop.
- Faster to value. Heist onboarding takes 10 minutes. Sprout typically takes a week of setup, training, and workflow configuration.
